Ms. Whitis holds Bachelor's and Master's of Music Education degrees from Delta State University and a Music Specialist Certification from the University of Mississippi. Additional doctoral study was done at Texas Tech University and Sam Houston State University.
Whitis has taught on the pre-school to university level. In addition to university teaching at Wayland Baptist University and UMHB, she has maintained private piano studios in Mississippi and Texas and has served as pianist/ choir director for many churches. Ms. Whitis is also a composer, with piano ensemble pieces published by Manduca Press.
Having a keen interest in traditional jazz piano, she presented in 2010 a lecture recital series entitled “Giants of Jazz Piano: The piano transcriptions of Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, and George Shearing,” performing at the conventions of the Texas Music Teachers’ Association as well as the Texas Music Educators’ Association.
Her professional affiliations include TMTA, TMEA, MTNA, the National Federation of Music Clubs, and the National Guild of Piano Teachers. Mrs. Whitis is a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music, holding the professional certificate in piano and theory. She also holds Kindermusik certification.
Mrs. Whitis is associate professor of music at UMHB, a position she has held since 2001. She is a pianist and teaches both class and private piano. She is the accompanist for “Schola Cantorum,” a community choir in Belton.
