Joseph Odell Tabarlet was born October 7, 1959 in Ruston, Louisiana and grew up in Shreveport, Louisiana.  He graduated from Southwood High School in 1977 and attended Louisiana State University in Shreveport, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Speech Communication from that institution in 1980.  In 1987, he earned a Master of Arts in Speech Commun­ication from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and earned his Ph.D. in Mass Communication from Florida State University in 1993.  He has read numerous papers at conven­tions and scholarly meet­ings, and published two articles, "Sex in Prime-time Tele­vision:  1979 Versus 1989," with Barry S. Sapolsky in the Journal of Broad­casting and Electronic Media in 1991, and “Sexual Behavior and References in Program Promotions Aired During Sweeps and Non-sweeps Periods,” with Barry S. Sapolsky and Barbara Kaye in the Journal of Promotion Management in 1996.    He has been a member of the faculty at Louisiana State University in Shreveport (1987–1988) and Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia (1991–1994). Since January 1995, he has been chairman of the Department of Communication and Dramatic Arts (now the Department of Communication and Media Studies) at UMHB. He was pr­omoted to Associate Professor in 2000 and to Professor in 2005. He married Martha Christine Thrasher of Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 1985. They and their children, Libby, 14, and James, 10, live in Belton.
